Man Down, solutions for the protection of operators

The "Man Down" Device: Safety for Lone Workers

The "Man Down" device, also known as a "Lone Worker Device", is a safety device designed for lone workers or isolated workers. These devices monitor the worker's posture and automatically activate a "Man Down" alarm after a predefined period of time if they detect a dangerous position.

This system is extremely valuable for those who work in conditions where they are not directly supervised, such as janitors, factory workers, and technicians who work in confined spaces.

For lone workers, the potential for physical harm from accidents and injuries increases as soon as it becomes difficult to contact emergency services. Therefore, rescue must be quick and automatic.

Lone workers do not benefit from the exchange or vocal signaling of danger with other colleagues, so they are required to make an immediate decision in every dangerous situation.

Due to the aforementioned difficulties, lone working creates specific working conditions:

  • It introduces changes in the worker's operation, requiring more information in terms of procedures.
  • It increases uncertainty and can lead to risky behavior in the performance of the activity.

An aid to personal safety

The Man Down solution allows you to communicate to the production or department manager, the operations center or any other figure involved in safety, the exact moment in which the lone worker is detected in a dangerous situation, so as to be able to immediately activate the plan of intervention. In our specific case, detecting means having the inclination, movement, detected acceleration/deceleration and the non-response time of the worker under control.

This data is continuously monitored and processed through advanced algorithms, in order to avoid false positives. Exceeding the defined parameters automatically generates an alarm and the same is sent to the personnel responsible for the intervention plan. This procedure must take place within the established timeframes, respecting workers' rights and within the provisions of the law in force, including privacy.

Man down system: who needs it?

The man down system is fundamental in a process of improving the safety of all lone workers. In this category we can highlight these activities:

  • Distribution service workers
  • Maintenance workers
  • Production workers
  • Cleaners
  • Warehouse workers
  • Construction workers and craftsmen
  • Goalkeepers
  • Operators in confined spaces

Features and practical benefits

The technology used in our systems

Man Down devices detect a state of emergency.
The operation of a Man Down alarm device is characterized based on the technologies used: type of sensors, algorithms used, type of localization and transmission.

To obtain the best result in terms of detection, it is always necessary to take into consideration which position the worker is normally in: whether he works while standing or sitting, or perhaps in both positions.

This will influence the setting of the system and the adequate positioning of the Tag by the worker, so as to have the best operational response of the system without generating false alarms.

It is important to use redundant detection techniques, such as tilt, impact, and non-motion. In this way it is possible to detect the physical anomaly relating to personnel working while sitting or moving.

Active TAGS with Man Down functionality

The TAG must be worn in the most suitable way and in a known position (e.g. vertical in the breast pocket), as well as always being kept with you in the workplace.

  • The TAG continues to detect the presence of movement 24 hours a day. If it detects an absence of movement for a period longer than 5 seconds it starts flashing.
  • If the TAG is in a horizontal position, it starts ringing after 5 seconds. However, if the TAG is held vertically, no sound warning is sent
  • After 30 seconds (customizable) of no movement detected:
    A) the buzzer integrated in the control unit closest to the TAG sounds
    B) as soon as the TAG detects movement, the system resets and returns to the quiet state
    C) specific alarm SMS and EMAIL indicating TAG Number - Warehouse - Zone, can be sent to the security manager
  • THE TAG cannot be turned off and does not require particular maintenance. When it starts to flash red (instead of the usual green color) it means that it is starting to run out of battery.
  • Charging requires a maximum of 4 hours and can be done via a traditional mobile phone USB connector.
The times and values previously indicated can be parameterized based on different work needs, with the exception of those relating to recharging the TAG batteries.
